A little bit of news from last week, announcing a £12m dance centre in Leeds. Dance is particularly important in encouraging participation in physical activity because it appeals to those who dislike competitive sport as well as those with an interest in the arts.
As with all aspects of education, it is important to have a variety of options available to young people (CAARE will soon be running a program on English folk dance), but also to have highly trained teachers who can deliver inspiring lessons. CAARE’s campaign for better training in PE for primary school teachers comes from this belief. The better informed someone is, the better they will be able to teach. There is little point mandating 3 hours of PE if the lessons can’t be made enjoyable.
